November is here. Take shelter and prepare for Christmas in Garage/Workshop!

It has happened before, and it will happen again.  I'm talking about when we've occasionally been wrong. When we had to reconsider our statements. It won't happen this time.

Here's some undisputable facts; It's getting colder, darker and rainier outside day by day and at least Swedish Govt. won't be able cope with Covid 19 for a long time still.

In addition, Santa is in quarantine too.

All of the above is of course negative, but if we choose to focus on the positive side, you can foresee more of socially accepted Garage/Workshop time and less of painful big family dinners. But you have to be prepared. You've got to start now to order the stuff that you need to have an atmoshperic workshop Christmas. And you've have to do it right now. That's what we're doing.

It can lead to Christmas stress in November for car guys and car gals. But when Christmas is here and all part that you need is there for you, a warm feeling of relief will come. You and the angle grinder all alone. Cozy.

During a pandemic it's important to be broadminded and promote competition. 

Salt Slush Diversity is leaving no one behind when leaves are falling; Cina's (GM) Chevrolet C20 Longbed. Magnus Ford F100 and Anders Dodge RAM (FSA).

Things that matters. A golden lawn mower throttle control...

...or a +1500hp AirWerks S500SX-E, both provide instant pleasure and both keep long term dreams alive. They serve as a carrier of hope during the depressing winter and when the grass is green, the roads are dry and race tracks are ready, stuff like this will once again provide pure happiness!

One mans trash is another womans treasure.

The Real Need. Something that keeps you awake at night. Something that pops up when you're between dream and reality. A longing that aches. No wet dreams or wild desires, instead an essential procurement that makes a ride complete and the inner eBay junkie to feel at ease.

Restless sleep and procurement pain can be solved by strong supply of money or by successful search for the holy grail.

This story is about the later. 

The scene: A blistering summer sun in the middle of high salt desert. A broken down tow car and frustration. 

Available on a Sunday in Wendover, US: A service minded workshop owner, a desert establishment that can solve whatever problem that turns off the highway. Come hell or high water. Come rich and poor. They serve and solve.

What happened: The race was on and the salt was solid, but the Salt Slush Chevy Suburban base camp was not in shape anymore. The starter motor had gone belly up and refused to turn the engine at a moment when a start was essential. The workshop owner provided friendly support. He offered, and delivered, an emotional ride in a dusty car hauler. A silent journey while waiting for his support under the zenith sun. Meanwhile things happened.

Temptation: Outside the workshop stood a Rocket. The number on it was 88. It had a torpedo shaped back, two doors and it looked like a P38 lightning. It belonged to Mr Rowley, and it was not for sale. 

At least until one year later when we once again were in Wendover to participate at Bonneville Speed Week with our 449 Amazon. At that point Mr. Rowley had changed his mind and his worn Rocket was for sale.

 

Advice: I called my friend Ulf Christiansson to get his view of the Olds Rocket.

He stated that;

- If it doesn't have original seats, be careful! These are really, really hard to find, you'll have to look for years! Other than that, buy it!   

I thought; How difficult can it be? And bought the car.

Let's get to the point...During the year that followed after I got Ulf's advice; We took a pre Corona trip to Pomona Swap Meet outside San Dimas and we made a zillion eBay search per day every day. We used all car guy network available and we scanned all Swedish and US junk yards all days all year around. 

- For what? 

- For a seat! 

-...or rather, for two seat benches that would fit a Chevy, Pontiac, Oldsmobile two door torpedo back body made between 1949-1951. 

ebay: Through a series of unlikely events I got in contact with Mark from Missouri, a solid man with a part supply that heals the mind of a searching soul. Telephone calls were frequent, pictures was exchanged and mutual trust finally sealed the deal. The rear seat deal.

A torpedo back (fastback) Olds, Pontiac, Chevy A-body 49-51 need a 50 inch seat bench. Nothing else will do.

Like a glove. The rear seat fits just fine. At this point Cina can hardly understand that we've reach a milestone, that we've finally found what we've been looking for.

 Seeing is believing. Cina is here taking in the room. Two benches are in place and a long search for seats is complete. Next phase can begin.

 

Epilogue: Race parts procurement might require patience and planning and loads of money too. Painful but true. Finding old odd ball part requires relentless detective work and a series of celebrations (a beer for each success on the way to victory!)

 

    

When times are bad and death is all around...Focus on having fun!

Covid is coming back. Terror try to tear us all apart.When you're feeling down, when the pandemic is pounding your brain, you've got to help yourself out. To endure this endless pain. You've got to stay mentally capable and healty. Take our advice and try to have fun. If you're having fun you'll stay sane and if you stay sane you'll stay solid. 

 

Salt Slush recipe: Start something up, make plans,

build stuff and have fun with few but true friends.

That's we're doing. This Saturday provided exitement, laughter and endorphines when we all joined forces and got Kalle's military Volvo (puppet) up and running.

For those of you who're not familiar with the tension, exitement and the Big Lebowski moment that's in the air when a group of gearheads is trying to fire up something that's been asleep for a long time it's a bit hard to explain, but most of you who read this post know what I'm taking about. 

The owner is sweating like niagra, someone are lending his or her hand to choke control. A couple of guys discuss start gas quality. Batteries of various standard and voltages are carried forward. Some are drinking coffee, others are drinking beer.

 After a few encouraging crankings and some solid black smoke there's always someone who's restrictiv with carbon monoxide. Petter the Proffessor were more concerned about CO than Covid and does not keep appropriate social distance to Magnus while fighting indoor exhaust fumes.

 In a safe and warm place after several years in Swedish Military service. After working in United Nation peace keeping administration and in addition peacefully providing waffle batter to a ski cafe on a not too high montain top in the middle of Sweden...it's time to serve Salt Slush Racing.

 

Chevy or Ford. A battle. Swedish Military representative is in the background and does not take a stand. A long tradition.

Meanwhile, in a cosy corner of the Salt Slush Speed Shop, Carina is having her Sunday moment and while getting one of her Suffolk's togeher piece by piece.

Magnus making magic. At some point in time, Magnus showed up with a truck load of trash. Literary. Bent frames, dented tanks and assorted pistons. Here's current status. A cool cat longing for a chain and clutch control.

Same Ariel. Still born in 1928, from and other angle and another light.

Another startup. When when a 92 year old wakes up after a long time in coma celebration is in the air. Magic made. Coming up: Test Drive

How about the Torpedo Back Rocket? Is it taking off? It's in the air, but does launch? Well, the corroded floor is long gone, the welding machine is cooling off and there's no more Fred Flintstone moment. We're now waiting for UPS to deliver rear seat in bad condition from a gentlemen in Missouri with wrecking on his mind. Will it fit? Nobody knows for sure, but we'll keep our beers cold and ready for celebration or comfort in a mourning moment. Like it or not, we'll keep you posted.

All fun and no work? Nope. Salt Slush support science. Pictured: Anders is building a device for Chalmers University of Technology and when Monday arrives we'll all stop playing and we'll be ready to share our knowhow about engine boosting and we'll provide boosting equippment that makes speed happen. 

Because we've had our weekend fun and we're relieved and revitalised and focused.

Garage Party Blues...

A garage-get-together makes people feel fine. No use to dress up in Sunday best, because a dark workshop illuminated with candle lights only, is not the right place and space. Instead garage casual. No matter whom you are and what you do to live, you can always grab a cold beer and enjoy good stories in a cool atmosphere. 

There's no need to look for conversational pieces either, since you’re imbedded and totally surrounded by amazing stuff full of downloaded dreams and sophisticated schemes.

Since Salt Slush like to host parties, where you can talk load, eat good food and drink cold beer, smoke inside and get exhaust fumes to the dessert, we're now in disperse. 

Because Corona killed it all. 

But when a vaccine is ready, we'll be ready too. We'll start up an Ardun Engine for dessert. We'll have the fridge full of Pabst and we'll fire up the range cooker and we"ll have a ball again. Until this is possible from a pandemic point of view, we're looking at some of the few existing pictures from past Salt Slush Garage Parties and hope to get back to 2019 and before soon...

Let's recap and think about how it was before The Pandemic...

 

 During one of our wilder parties we started up a 27L Merlin as avec. 

What a show, what a blast!

 

 In 2018, there were no social distance.

  

Magnus and his band were playing load back on Ringön back in 2014.

It's important to not have all parties in same shop. Therefore we spent new year eve 2016-2017 in Kalle's garage. 

Confirmed: The hat makes the man (and woman).

Long before the pandemic, back in 2014. To a period in time when we just started to build our Land Speed Racer and knew very little about what was coming. 3 year later we actually ran our first race at El Mirage.

 

Spring 2020, small dinner outside our Speed Shop. Social distance and no party. 

Well, no real party.

 

But one of these days, the pandemic will be over and we'll arrrange a garage party to remember. We'll party as if it way 2019 again and we'll book ticket to US the day after and we'll race as if there were no tomorrow!

Report out from end of the rainbow...

The end of the rainbow. Atlantis. 

We all know that these places and spaces can be wet but nice. But at the same time we've learned that there's no use looking for these spots. Because in some peoples narrow mind these places are magical, irrational and doesn't even exist.  

But one day there was a sign. A sign saying;

-Go to Hjo (in Sweden). 

-Go there in the autumn. 

-Go there and you'll find what you've been seeking.

All good thing are 3 so off we went.

At this point, we didn't want to act rational because we were on a magic journey and at occations like this, Excel sheets doesn't help out and could eventually be couterproductive.

Hence we revved up two Square Body pick-up trucks and headed straight towards the eye of the storm. In essence, when looking for magic, you've got to do what you've got to do.

Rain was pooring down heavily. Noak came to mind. Suddenly there was a sign. A rainbow but no parade.

When we arriving others have already gathered. 

We felt that we were in the right spot. 

Where magic happens.

 

End of Rainbow reached. Forgotten treasure found. A Gasser from the sixties that over time lost its heart and power but now has got a transplant and were revitalized...

...with a 489 Big Block Chevy and a 10-71 (!) GMC Supercharger. All the right Gasser Stuff plus a new front end and a new front frame. 

 

This beast got some serious power (1200hp) and was shaking the ground literary. For real. Old racers moved fingers to their ears. 

Gravel and autumn leaves found the way to the soup served. 

A soft beg for mercy was heard. 

Nobody complained about engine response. Nobody.

 

For those with a 10-71 equipped big block race car, this is a reasonable daily drive. We're here talking about a GMC 4-71 Supercharger and a small block chevy and modest 550hp. 

Again reasonable ride at the spot where we were.

There were other cars too. Like this Roadster with a body made by Erik Hansson.

 

As well a really old (one of the first?) Magnuson Superchagers installation was on display .  Works just fine according to the owner, but obviously Magnuson has made a giant leap forward in technology since those days.  

 After looking at all these treasures we had to go back to Gothenburg. The skies were still gloomy, but after a while, when we looked in the mirror we could see the rainbow again. Still indicating where to look for amazing stuff.

How an Amazon and a Cowboy came to a too tight spot.

Some say they come in pairs. Some say they're loners. Some state that it's faith or a coincidence. I'm talking about the contagious car search that eventually connects cars and people while changing roomy places in to tight spaces.

What happened lately in the Salt Slush workshop is likely to happen over and over again. We're there are car guys there will always be dreams related to new projects.

Suddenly all tabs exposed on the workshop laptop were full of desires and I'm not talking about obvious desires related to breeding and lust. Nope. The wishes exposed were more profound and gave a hint about what was about to happen. Sooner or later. Or rather, sooner than later...

Suddenly, a Blueberry from the US of A arrives to a cloudy Ringön after years in the Californian sun.

I guess there's no use arguing about low mileage with these badges in the front?

Petter, The Professor, got going at once. Brakes, idle quality and electrical system needs attention before approaching Swedish registration and approval.

Wouldn't a S200SX-E turbo cheer this baby up?

Meanwhile, Magnus had investigated the global F100 market thoroughly...and he know them all. From Campers in Colorado to Californian Crew Cabs and he had found a favorite. In Sunne, Sweden. 

So off we went. On a road trip with a purpose. 

Final destination: Sunne. 

What did we find out there in the wilderness?  

A bad side of a tough looking Ford.

Rust, charm and potential. Great potential.  

In less than an hour's time, Magnus signed the line....and he got a Ford, that will eat up road. So that's what Magnus did and flipped up the cash that sealed the deal and made two people happy that Sunday in Sunne.

We tooled our way home in great comfort.

Former owner were worried about the tires. We were not...we were too busy being worried about all other stuff therefore got a bit surprised when rear right went flat in Kungälv.
