The Surge!

As the Salt slush team woke up this Sunday, we were all energised and exited. Even the Sun was shining (in Gothenburg!) on our trailer as we were heading for PRD Motorsport in Gothenburg. Why this cheerful atmosphere?

Well, everything worked just fine, since last time, we've fixed the oil leakage and the coolant system did not erupt anymore.  Therefore we were ready for some serious power. What could possibly go wrong?

As it turned out, our worst fear about the parallell bi turbo system became real... But let's start from the beginning!
It drives like a daily driver! Anders is attacking the trailer with confidence!
On board! We're good. No door, no roof, no exercise needed to get out of the car.
Rotortest and Exhaust pipes being assembled. We're still in The calm before the storm mode.
The Salt Slush Amazon (well at least the chassi) connected to the PRD Motorsport Rotortest.
Connected! Attached! Ready.
We filled up the tank with Shell V-Power fuel (RON 100) available on tap Sweden.
Magnus, Anders and P.A at the laptop and Håkan at the pedal.
Health balancer: Vitamin C and Mobile1
The base boost calibration (fully open wastegate) was done faster than a normal Swedish coffee break (almost) and with 0.4 bar boost pressure we eventually reached 335 rear wheel horsepower, which means approximately 350-360hp on the crank. What a start! Not really the wanted 900hp, but it proves that we´re on right track. Just add some boost and then... still no leakage and a coolant system steady a could be. Life was good.

All good? NO! The fear we had about compressor surge became real.
Yes, we know and we knew it from the start, that two rather small turbines, two pulse dominated, low volume exhaust manifolds and two high flow compressors is like asking for compressor surge. But still. When we experienced compressor surge after seconds at 5500 rpm the team spirit went from good to bad mood.

But then, suddenly, we realized that we are Salt Slush Racing and we have a solution! It's called BorgWarner EFR 9180 and we have it on the shelf!

And honestly speaking, we have been talking about the change a long time because we really love the EFR series and this change will solve the problem. Yes, we need to re-do some plumbing, but after all building exhaust manifold is fun and relaxing (Magnus words).

Current status:
Old turbo system disassembled.
All tubes and flanged ordered.
Base boost power is really good.
Team spirit and the good mood is back.
900hp is within reach.
To be continued...

Saturday night live by Salt Slush

Post som short film clips from Saturday.
Last week we have been preparing for today, sorting out fixing etc.

Sunday morning we will be on our way to the second tuning of the engine.
We are to spend Sunday at PRD Motor Sport and there dyno.

Still a lot off work left ! But we will get there step by step.

We have to do the calibration from start today since we found an issue by the fuel pressure regulator pushing the calibration in the wrong direction.

Håkan testing that we have nice and even temps.

Doing som testing.

Why not some stumbling fun, maybe not at a level you expect from a well tuned engine

Now we can read out live via the Holley race pack.

Consume, Connect and Contemplate

A good day should have it all. But joy and happiness doesn't come easy. What I mean? Let me explain with some example from the Salt Slush Racing Workshop this Saturday.
To start with you have to contribute to the society. You must make sure to spend your money in order to add tax money to the system. How? By doing some shopping of course. It gives you a kick and helps to contribute to the eternal growth. A win-win concept. Here's Magnus in moment of true luck with his brand new Milwaukee angle grinder.
A second ingrediens to be connected to a higher power and experience true excitement.
In these two pictures Magnus is Connected to The God of Speed as he and the Salt Slush team is checking that all oil leakages are sealed, the coolant system is sealed and the base calibration is ok

Still...Connected. We currently have the grace of God of Speed But for how long?
No one can tell,
Then it's time to contemplate. Wise monks make wine in the mountains, while Magnus is concept phase creating magnificent streamline door openers.
How a bout this?

Calling in the Cavalry or at least some methology

In an earlier blog you read about our planning work. This work has now been intensifed since we all of a sudden understood that 2017 is soon here and that's when we aim to send our Amazon to California , USA, for some first stumbling steps on El Mirage

We needed to create a plan and put some logic and stability into our way forward. How do you do that ? Well you bring in some of our day time skills, like project management from Volvo cars (the simplistic basic approach). Post it mapping... visualisation.. creating a platform for our doings. Marcus Percival, with a degree from Cambridge in Mathematical Science, at that time headed by Stephen Hawkings gave us a steady hand and stabil  academic foundation to our normally agricultural approach.

Top view, hmm do we see any patterns?

Not 50 000 feet, more 2 meters but, still a perspective. You need to take a step back, search for patterns and find way forward. Here Anders supported by Marcus starts to dig in to it.

Planning combined with checking the rule book.

Details are key, You also can see that we started to write a to-do list for what to focus between Christmas and New Year.

Magnus, the lawyer.

He maybe doesn't look like a Lawyer, but I warn you,  he is in to it... Magnus handles the most complex steps regarding all types of regulations and rules like SCTA rule book, Tax Authority, General discussions with the Police and Business partners. The master of logic, understand the wording, finds or block the loop holes as well as creating untoucheable set ups.

Now we reached a level where we could hang it on to something .....we saw a manageable way forward, confidence increased ... My Model A .....worked just fine as a white board. All in all a very good exercise.

Here Marcus in steps carefully explain the theory behind chaos. Lets put it like this, we are rather easy to describe and use as a case in Chaos theory.

Scooter (Mopeds) invasion gave us the Husqvarna pest

What happened in Hollister the 4th of July 1947 was maybe the trigger to what is happening now at Ringön. We have a Scooter invasion ! Petter D hasn't showed his colours before .... Now in retro perspective the warning signs has been there ... We should have known better and interfered, with necessary determination, Now it's to late.

One more moped arrived to the Garage Petter fooled Anders to transport it !

We have contact

Here you see the sprocket on the engine no teehts left ... only slipping and sliding for the chain.

Petter is a Scooter motor addict at first we thought he was slow, extremely slow since we seen him working on an eggmotor every weekend. Todays we saw and understood the magnitude of the plot.

Hidden from friends

In Petter's locked and closed storage we found 5 complete engines repaired and well working.
After a couple of minutes he admitted that he had more, allot more  10 engines and 13 mopeds/scootes....

Whoops a moped without a Motor

Gas thank in magic mythical condition

One of the Egg Motors with an Elegant Husqvarna Logo, very nice design.

Whoops suddenly two mopeds.

What shall we do set up a meeting with an agenda to stop this ? otherwise we will have motors and scooters everywhere................although we have to admit that at least Me Håkan and Anders got the Husqvarna bug........simultaneously we started to talk and surf after Husky 390 CR or WR Ok a 250 and or 400 can work... but it has to have steel tank.......

We should have stoped it !  Now we got the Huskqvarna decease... and that is bad, really bad.

Salt Slush Racing with a twist of Othello

Life sometimes offers situation were you have to make up your mind, hopefully in time to avoid hurting people and sensitiv souls. When it goes bad, feelings like jelaousy, un responded love, betrayal and sometimes even pure evilness surface.

What happened in the garage were that Håkan & Carina started to show interest for a new garden hero, A Flymo lawnmower the shortcut to gardening versus a Suffolk lawnmower. If you have some ambition with your gardening the Flymo rout is to short.

As you understand the Suffolk lawnmover went in to an emotional rolercoaster involving all of above feelings.

At the Fika we started to discuss dramas like Othello, Romeo and Juliet, short conclusion the same feelings and dramas that took place in Shakespeares most epic plays happened just in front of us in the SSR Garage.

Extremely bad spirits and pretty tensed discussions started to be visible in the Garage. The Suffolk felt the intruder and started to create a series of protests in the garage. The welder behaved strangely, the compressor stoped.

The intruder ! The Lazy solution.

Taking a position in our garage rather provocative at least if you are a Suffolk.

The Suffolk behaved like a Gentleman, didn't create any visible chaos, more like British do it politely, in beaded in a series of polite wordings. To be frank a Swede finds it very polite and do not at all pick up the message. Besides of the red Carina has green and Magnus a beige.

The friends of Suffolk gave strong support in the debate,
here the cultivator geting ready for som contribution, this one is pretty dangerous if it gets going.

With almost no margin we managed to stabilise the situation The Flymo was moved closer to the exit door, not so warm and cosy combined with a statement from our side that no new premium oil this year ! No discussion ! it has to use the old black.

So extremely close, but we managed to avoid a classic drama worthy Shakespeare.

High, Low and Behold. Saturday night live from Gothenburg!

Saturday is as you know by now, the Salt Slush play day. This play day was cold and sunny with no rain and no snow and provided action and fun.

Magnus were in need of support. He needed to decided about rims for his T 26 Coupe. 6" 7" or 8"?  Important stuff. Can't be ignored.
I used 16 X 8 for my 32 roadster. Hmmmmm is this Magnus size of wheel?
Front 15 x 5 looks a little too fat..perhaps..or not?

The Fika discussion became real when Magnus asked for tech support involving a Tractor, a VW Golf and some other equipment.  Summary; my rims are slightly to wide ...

Oops! What's this? One more moped from/to Petters stable? Well, this two wheel contraption arrived on Anders Dodge Hemi RAM today. How to react?
Once inside, we revisited the Salt Slush race and create plan, which was needed since we aim to ship the car next year to US of A early spring 2017 and this means that we're in need for some serious planning ....
Håkan, who's in love with various boost devices, has just had a good discussion with one of our super competent retailers and therefore he's showing a + 1200 hp S400SX-E turbo which SL turbo in Värmland, Sweden has just ordered.
Meanwhile planning has reached a new and higher level. This means that the time plan could hang on my Model A Ford.

Just a couple of hours before the time plan was created, a man tried to buy my model A. In vain.
I had to say no to his offer, since I was not prepared for a life without a Ford Model A. I guess (and hope) that you know what I mean.
Now back to the Amazon. Should we have a wing?... or not? Ideas, discussions...review of  the SCTA rule book. Then again, ideas, discussions...
Watch out! Here's a trigger for a big time Othello drama! A Flymo lawnmower in a Suffolk community! Big warning! Salt Slush is normally in to Suffolk's, delivered from the small green island west of what we normally would call Europe. Yes, it hoovers above zeitgeist, close to the peace Ford from -46.
How about that?
Anders is working on creating a plastic windows mock up. Where will he end up? Stay tuned, or rather stay sharp, then we might let you know.
Exposed! Parts for my Coolant tank drama...solution coming up to a Ringö-theater near You! Soon!
Finally, Magnus Magnificent nailhead. Pictured when waiting for Magnus. Like a dog.
What is this? A blindfolded high speed beast? Or a dream? Or a wind shield wind mock-up? Let's find out.
Visibility and transparty is king.
Passion, paper and performance. All in one..
Barbecue in workshop being cleaned.

Small engine division.
